JOB DESCRIPTION:
Responsible for leading the Nutritional beverage team and leading projects
where new development is required, meeting customer expectations and growing the business
with the commercial teams.
This person is expected to build up strong links with the relevant sales people
and support customer activities as required (presentation, concept development, information
support, visits, etc.). This role requires a thorough understanding of Company ingredients,
flavor and processing technologies that are of commercial interest to the Nutritional beverage end-use market.
The R&D Manager is expected to work closely with the Process Development Managers to
develop new products and to ensure a seamless transfer of information from pilot-scale to
commercial scale. This person is expected to develop strong links with the product technology
teams so as to leverage their expertise in projects as deemed appropriate and to help develop
market-led strategies to drive future technology projects.
One of the main requirements of this role is to work with the R&D Director to establish a
Center of Excellence for Nutritional Beverage Application and Processing. The R&D Manager is
expected to develop a commercial-led library of application concepts that highlight the Company’s
proficiency in processing and packaging, flavor profiles and stability, protein functionality and
process tolerance, fiber/hydrocolloid functionality, amongst others in liquid and powder systems.
The R&D Manager is expected to continue to develop their skills in nutrition, processing, and food
science and technology and to develop a training manual for other team members.
The R&D Manager ensures that all formulations, reports, etc., are compiled and stored in the
appropriate IT system. The R&D Manager is expected to ensure the nutritional accuracy of all
beverage formulations. It is a requirement that the R&D Manager travel to Company beverage
processing sites and facilities to learn and import processing knowledge back into the corporate center.
The R&D Manager will support the activities of the other parts of the Beverage
Applications team as required and will support the R&D Director in the preparation of
meetings, strategy, customer visits, factory support, external representation of Company
Beverages, supplier relationships, technical activities, amongst others as needed.
Priorities for 2010
Get the development labs and pilot plants operational and develop link with factories.
Develop a library of concepts to support sales activities.
Establish links with sales team and carry out training/meetings as needed
Establish links with technology teams
Visit customers on key projects
Support R&D director with technical activities and develop and lead team
Develop a library of heat stable chocolate, vanilla and strawberry flavors
Assess properties of proteins in beverages (price, stability, taste, etc).
